Admission
The minimum requirements for admission to this program are:
- A bachelor’s degree with a major in mathematics or equivalent mathematical training.
- Evidence that the student is likely to succeed:
- This must include three letters of recommendation from mathematicians, usually the applicant’s current or former teachers.
- A complete transcript of previous college studies including grades in all mathematics courses.
- Acceptance by both the Mathematics Department and the Graduate School.
Requirements
The requirements for the Master’s degree consist, in essence, of two parts.
Core Courses
You need to take at least four of the so-called core courses. These are the same courses that PhD students take. The list of core courses is:
- MAT 548 - Topology, Geometry I
- MAT 549 - Topology, Geometry II
- MAT 532 - Real Analysis I
- MAT 533 - Real Analysis II
- MAT 534 - Algebra I
- MAT 535 - Algebra II
- MAT 536 - Complex Analysis I
If you decide not to take all seven core courses, you need to extend your list of core courses to seven courses by taking advanced undergraduate classes. You can complement your list of core courses with the following courses:
- MAT 521 - Number Theory
- MAT 522 - Real Analysis (Measure Theory)
- MAT 523 - Analysis in Several Dimensions
- MAT 524 - Abstract Algebra
- MAT 525 - Abstract Algebra II
- MAT 526 - Advanced Linear Algebra
- MAT 528 - Foundations of Topology
- MAT 529 - Topology and Geometry
Ideally, one would take all seven core courses. The second list of courses, MAT 52x, is intended for students who do not yet feel prepared enough to take, for example, the analysis core course MAT 532. In such a case, the student can take MAT 522.
You can take at most three of the MAT 52x courses.
Supplementary Courses
The student is required to take three supplementary courses. The student is free to choose these courses. They can even be courses from other departments, such as Applied Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, etc. Before registering for a supplementary course, students need to get approval from the Director of the Program.
Grades
Your overall GPA should be 3.0 or higher. Only courses with a letter grade (A, B, C, D, F) can be used toward the requirements. The courses need to have an exam. Courses with only a Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory grade cannot be used.
A Master’s thesis is NOT a requirement.
Participation in the comprehensive examinations (COMPS) is NOT a requirement.

To apply to the Masters (Professional Option) program, you need to fill out an application form and include the following material:
- A statement of purpose, describing your background and interests
- Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended
- At least three recommendation letters; this is the most important part of your application
- Application fee (currently $100)
GRE scores are not required and will not be considered.
