Virtual open house for admitted PhD students
Thursday, April 2
(all times are Eastern Daylight Time = Greenwich -4)
Intro to Stony Brook math:
9am and 1pm: Introduction to Stony Brook math PhD program, and Q&A
Sam Grushevsky (graduate program director) Zoom meeting; Zoom ID: 705 575 5757
Group zoom activities:
- 3.30pm - Virtual department tea time - BYOVB
(bring your own virtual beverage :) )
(the department normally has a tea, joint with Simons Center, Institute of Mathematical Seiences, and Yang Institute for Theoretical Physics
at this time)
The first part of Tea Time will be one large Zoom meeting where everyone sees everyone and people have a chance to introduce
themselves. The second
part will utilize Zoom Breakout Rooms for smaller, more manageable conversations. Grad students will be put into different breakout rooms and
prospective students will be randomly assigned to one of them at first. Each participant will be given co-host permission which will allow them to
freely reassign themselves to any room they want. This will only work if you are on a computer, not on a mobile device or
tablet
- 10.00am-11.30am: Virtual visit to an off-campus graduate student house (math and life
at Stony Brook questions)
(Roberto Albesiano, Nathan Chen, Prithviraj Chowdhury, Matthew Dannenberg, Jordan Rainone)
- 11.30am-1.00pm You can Visit an advanced topics course on Renormalization, taught by Misha Lyubich
- 11.30am-1.00pm Algebraic geometry graduate students open house
(Roberto Albesiano, Frederik Benirschke, Nathan Chen, Prithviraj Chowdhury, Lisa Marquand, Mads Villadsen)
- 12.30pm-1.30pm First and second year PhD
students
- 1.30pm-2.30pm Dynamics graduate students open
house
(Timothy Alland, Jack Burkart, Matthew Dannenberg, Willie Lim, Jacob Mazor)
- 3.00pm-3.30pm
Analysis graduate students open house
(El Mehdi Ainasse, Jack Burkart, Owen Mireles Briones, Matt Dannenberg, Emily Schaal, Paul Sweeney, Pranav Upadrashta) - 3.30pm Virtual tea time (see
above)
- 4.00pm-5.00pm Grad women at Stony Brook
