Download Free Books by Knapp
From lower down on this page, anyone can download free PDF files of
certain
editions of the five most recent books by Anthony W. Knapp.
These books are
at the first-year graduate level or a
little higher, depending on one's university. Four of these books
are "digital second editions" of books whose first editions were
published in the Cornerstones series of Birkhäuser Boston between 2005
and 2007. The other book is the "original digital edition" of a
more recent book that was not published previously in any form.
All five
books are
available for download here:
- Basic Algebra
(digital
second edition)
- Basic Real Analysis, with
an appendix "Elementary Complex
Analysis" (digital second edition)
- Stokes's Theorem and Whitney
Manifolds (original digital edition)
- Advanced Algebra
(digital
second edition)
- Advanced Real Analysis
(digital second edition).
The files of the books have
been made available as a gift to the
mathematics community worldwide. The files are limited to
noncommercial use for purposes of education, scholarship, and
research. Pages of the files may be freely stored electronically,
freely accessed, freely copied, and freely transmitted. A few
specific conditions on electronic use are imposed to maintain the
noncommercial nature of the files and ensure the integrity of the
individual pages, including that no one is ever charged a fee for
acquiring or looking at the files and that the files are not translated
into any other computer format (e.g., EPUB). The specific
conditions are spelled out on a
separate webpage, and a copy of them appears on page iv (the fourth
page of the front matter) of the PDF file of each book. Please adhere to these conditions.
The books were typeset by Textures using AMS-TeX, and the figures were
drawn in Mathematica. Anyone who wants to know how a display was
coded in AMS-TeX or a figure was drawn in Mathematica is invited to
send the author an email and ask, rather than try to dissect the PDF
files.
Printing of the files is constrained
legally. One reason is that Springer Science+Business
Media, Inc. has a stake in
printed copies of the four books whose first editions were
published in the Cornerstones series of Birkhäuser Boston, as is
explained in the brief history
below, and Springer's permission may be required for printing.
For a discussion of these legal considerations, click here. In the case of Stokes's Theorem and Whitney Manifolds,
Project Euclid
has a nonexclusive license to make printed copies of the books and
offer them for sale at cost. As of March 2022 no one else had
such a license.

Julien
Tinnes pointed out to the author how one could add a clickable table of
contents as a sidebar to any PDF book, and he kindly wrote a program to
carry out most of the steps for preparing such a modified file for each
of the above five books. The resulting files are offered below
for each book with directions saying "Download
clickable
version of front cover
and inside together as PDF." Using this feature is within the
scope of the terms and conditions
referenced above.
Unfortunately the exact way in which the clickable versions work
depends on what
PDF reader one uses, and terminology varies as well. People who
use Apple's program Preview or
Adobe's program Adobe Reader will see that when one brings up a
clickable file
of each book
the first time, the file appears initially on the screen in a window
that has a sidebar on the
left. The chapter titles appear in the sidebar as separate
entries
with an arrow at the left of each. If the arrow points to the
chapter title, then clicking on the arrow will expand
the listing to include section titles for that chapter. Clicking
on any chapter title or section title will take one to the first page
of
that chapter or section.
In Preview one can switch between the Table of Contents in the sidebar
and Thumbnails
of all pages in the sidebar by using the View menu. In Adobe
Reader one can
carry out this switch in the View > Navigation Panel menu by
toggling between Bookmarks and Pages. In Adobe Reader the same
effect can be achieved also by means of icons in the far left column of
the
sidebar.
Many people view PDF files with a browser rather than Preview or Adobe
Reader. Some popular browsers that are free of charge are Google
Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge, and Apple Safari. All of
these but Safari behave on first appearance in the same way that
Preview and Adobe Reader behave. Safari seems to require two
extra steps to make use of the clickable table of contents. A
user points to a PDF file in Safari, then saves the file somewhere, and
finally views the saved file in Preview.
Brief History
The author (Anthony W. Knapp) and the publisher (Birkhäuser Boston,
Inc.) signed two contracts dated March 19 and 20, 2003, one for a book
in real analysis and one for a book in algebra. Under these
contracts the author retained copyright but granted to the publisher a
license for the "full and exclusive rights covered under the copyright
of the Work and all revisions thereof .... ." The contracts
specifically stated, "The rights granted and assigned to the Publisher
are limited to those rights concerning print media."
For marketing purposes, each of the books was later subdivided into two
smaller books, Basic and Advanced, which were printed
separately. The two real analysis books appeared in print in
2005, and the two algebra books appeared in print in 2006 and
2007. No decision was made at that time concerning electronic
publication. Nevertheless, some companies and individuals took it
upon themselves to publish and sell electronic versions of some or all
of the books without permission; some of these electronic versions were
of poor quality.
Birkhäuser, a Swiss company, had been a member of the Springer group
since 1985. About 2010, Springer underwent some kind of
reorganization, the Boston office of Birkhäuser was closed, and the
operations of the Birkhäuser Boston office were consolidated into the
New York office of Springer. The contracts remained in force but
with Springer Science+Business Media Inc. as publisher rather than
Birkhäuser. Thus Springer
as of 2016 had "full and exclusive rights covered under the copyright
of the Work" concerning print media, for both the original editions and
the current revisions of Basic
Algebra, Basic Real Analysis,
Advanced Algebra, and Advanced Real Analysis.
Before 2016 the author never authorized anyone to publish any of the
books in
any form other than print media. As of January 2016 he gave the
general
authorization described higher up on this page concerning PDF files of
four of the books, and he
extended that authorization to the fifth book upon its publication in
2021. He is hoping that
people will not be tempted to degrade the quality of the files by
translating them into other formats.
Download Appropriate Edition of Each Book
For each book the front cover and the inside are available together as
a single
PDF file. Both a standard version and a
clickable version are
available. In both cases the inside pages are black and white
only. The printed area of
the inside pages is 28 picas wide and 43 picas high. It is
centered left to right, so that if two printed pages on pages of size
8.5 inches by 11 inches are held up back to back, then their printed
areas will coincide. The size of the front cover is 6 inches by
9.5 inches and the placement of the cover in the PDF files is
consistent with the printing on the inside pages. Thumbnails of
the front covers appear below.
