Fall 2025

General Information

Textbook:
Mark A. Pinsky, Partial Differential Equations and Boundary Value Problems with Applications, 3rd ed., American Mathematical Society, 2011.
Selected chapters of the book are available online.

Homework:
Homework is an essential component of the course and represents a significant portion of your grade. Assignments will be posted weekly in the syllabus section and are due in class on the specified due date. If you are unable to attend class, you must submit your homework to the instructor’s office by noon on the due date (place it under the door if the instructor is not present). Late submissions will not be accepted. You are encouraged to discuss problems with classmates; collaboration is often beneficial. However, the work you submit must be written in your own words. Please also include the names of your study partners on each assignment. Check your email regularly for updates and announcements.

Grading Policy:

  • Homework - 20%

  • Midterm 1 - 20%

  • Midterm 2 - 20%

  • Final Exam - 40%

Makeup Examinations:
There is no standard makeup exam policy. In the case of unforeseeable circumstances beyond the student’s control, the missed exam score may be dropped.

Students with Disabilities:
If you have a physical, psychological, medical, or learning disability that may affect your coursework, please contact Disability Support Services at (631) 632-6748 or visit studentaffairs.stonybrook.edu/dss. They will work with you to determine appropriate accommodations. All information and documentation will remain confidential.

Students who may need assistance during emergency evacuations are encouraged to discuss their requirements with both their instructors and Disability Support Services. For more information, visit sunysb.edu/ehs/fire/disabilities.shtml.
