Welcome to MAT 312

This course covers the fundamentals of abstract algebra: groups, informal set theory, relations, polynomials, together with some applications: error correcting codes, Burnside's theorem, computational complexity, Chinese remainder theorem. This course is offered as both AMS 351 and MAT 312.

Midterm 1 is next week! For Lecture 1, it will be given in class on Th, Feb 27; for Lecture 2, on Fri, Feb 28. .
Since the lecture on Th was canceled, students in Tu-Th lecture (Lecture 1) should only submit HW problems for Section 1.4 on Monday, Feb 17. Problems for section 1.5 should be submitted next week. .
First homework is due next week!.
