Descartes (and sutras)

 Wednesday Nov 18

Link of solution of the one of the cubic equations, and link for a solution of a second type.

Descartes curve from La Geometrie in Geogebra (same as below). You can drag the point L.To start, to get familiar with the app and the curve, leave the slides a, b, and c fixed. You can play with them later, and see how they affect the curve.

Sutras.

  1. Activity 1 Baudhayana Sulbasutra 1 in Geogebra. (You can also do the activity in pen and paper)
  2. Activity 2: Baudhayana Sulbasutra 2 in Geogebra  Lecture 2, morning. (If you have trouble with the Geogebra class, try this link)
  3. Activity 3: Baudhayana Sulbasutra 3 - Lecture 2, morning. Geogebra Class.  (If you have trouble with the Geogebra class, try this link
  4. Activity 4: See this geogebra app for the “implementation” of the sutra: If it is desired to transform a rectangle into a square, its breadth is taken as the side of a square [and this square on the breadth is cut off from the rectangle]. The remainder [of the rectangle] is divided into two equal parts and placed on two sides [one part on each]. The empty space [in the corner] is filled up with a [square] piece. The removal of it [of the square piece from the square thus formed to get the required square] has been stated [before],
  5. Activity 5: Baudhayana Sulbasutra 5 - Lecture 2, morning. Geogebra Class.  (If you have trouble with the Geogebra class, try this link

  1. Geoebra classroom: Lecture 2 and Lecture 1and activity (use the link for the activity if the classroom does not work) Send me a screenshot of your work by email if you do not use the geogebra classroom link.
  2. Activity 2

Paper study

  1. Form to fill with the group. (Each group should fill jointly as many forms as quantity of members of the group)
  2. Individual form to fill after the group activity (if there is time). It should be completed by Wed. Nov 11th. No google docs links, please. It makes it very hard to read for me.

Guidelines (links are above)

  • About 4 minutes discussion of the form of each member of the group.
  • The whole  group fills one group form for each member (and the member whose forms is discussed takes notes)
  • If there is time left, start filling the individual form.
  • The more constructive criticism you give to your classmates, the more chance you give them to improve.
