MAT 122 - Overview of Calculus with Applications

Course Information

Course Description

The basics of calculus in a self-contained, one-semester course. Properties and applications of polynomial, exponential, and logarithmic functions. Derivatives: slopes, rates of change, optimization, integrals, area, cumulative change, and average. The fundamental theorem of calculus. Emphasis on modeling examples from business.

Prerequisites

C or better in MAP 103 or level 3 on the mathematics placement exam (Prerequisite must be met within one year prior to beginning the course.)

Textbook

Applied Calculus by Shana Calaway, Dale Hoffman, David Lippman.

Lecture Times

Lectures are on Tuesday and Thursday from 2pm until 3:20pm in Earth&Space 001

Tuesday and Thursday 11-12 in the math tower, room 3-112

Grading System

Grades will be curved. Here are estimates for grade cutoffs, but these will most likely change.

Exams

There will be four midterms held during class hours. Your lowest midterm score will be dropped. There will also be a final exam covering all the material.

Homework

Homework will be assigned according to the schedule below. It will be online homework set on Brightspace. There will also be practice questions assigned that won't be graded. There will be a total of 8 online homework sets. The bottom 2 grades from these 8 online homework sets will be dropped.
