Arriving at Heraklion by air

The principal airport in Crete is Heraklion International Airport, “Nikos Kazantzakis” (airport code: HER). It is located about 5 km east of the city center of Heraklion and can be reached by many charter flights from several European cities. You can also reach HER from Athens and other major Greek cities by daily flights. Flight time from/to Athens is about 40min.

For more information please check: http://www.heraklion-airport.info/.

When you arrive at Heraklion airport, you can take a taxi or use public transportation to get to the city center. Local buses leave from the airport every few minutes from Monday to Saturday (the service is less frequent on Sundays). Moreover, there is the option of renting a car at the airport.

Update: You can take bus number 1,11,12, or 31 to get to the city center. If you are staying at El Greco, Kastro or Old Port Apartments, you can get off at Plateia Kornarou stop or Agiou Mina stop (Saint Minas Cathedral). There is a ticket machine next to the bus stop at the airport and you will need to use the orange ticket (1.20 euros). See the bus stops in the city center on the map located in the accommodation tab.

Another (but less convenient) way to get to Heraklion is to fly to Chania International Airport (airport code: CHQ). For more information see below.

Arriving at Heraklion by sea

Throughout the year there are daily trips connecting Heraklion with Piraeus (Athens). The boats usually sail during the night and the duration of the trip is about 7 hours.

Some companies which serve this trip are: Minoan Lines, ANEK Lines and Superfast Ferries.

Heraklion port is located close to the city center. To reach your hotel, you can take a taxi (it is easy to find one at the port) or you can even walk (since most hotels are located in the city center).

Arriving at Heraklion by land

If you fly to Chania airport (CHQ), you can go to Chania city center by local bus, and then use the coach (ΚΤΕΛ) to arrive at Heraklion, which takes approximately 3 hours. Alternatively, you can rent a car at the airport and drive approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes to reach Heraklion city center.

There is also a coach (ΚΤΕΛ) which serves all major cities of the island. For more information please check: http://www.e-ktel.com/en/tourist-guide/cities and also https://www.ktelherlas.gr/en/.
