Subject: techics

Congratulations on your beautiful site! I am interested in using
technics elements (gears, mostly) to build a model of part of an
ancient astronomical mechanism (the "Antikythera Device").
But it seems that the parts come only in the huge and expensive
sets. Any advice? Tony Phillips

Subject: the law

Dear Professor Smil,

I edit a webpage for the American Mathematical Society:

www.ams.org/new-in-math

I would like to mention your Nature piece on "Laying down
the Law". May I have your permission to copy the graphics
you use in Figure 1?

I will also ask permission from Nature, but they want the
author to agree too.
