Hi

I wrote that article, back in 2000. You can translate
it if you are interested, but you should know that more
recent studies of the mechanism have shown that most of
the detailed analysis (based on work of De Solla Price)
is most likely wrong: see the "Update" paragraph inserted
at the start.
   Also the Java animations no longer run; they do
not seem to be worth reanimating since they may no longer 
correspond to reality.
