Text: A Transition to Advanced Mathematics by Smith, Eggen, and St. Andre.

Webpage: http://www.math.sunysb.edu/~scott/mat511.fall03/

About this course: This course aims to develop your appreciation of the logical basis of mathematics, and to lay the foundation for subsequent courses in the program. We will study fundamental ideas like number, set, and function, and also work to enhance your ability to understand and construct proofs. Since one can only learn mathematics by doing it, the in-class work and homework are integral parts of the course.

Examinations and grading:

Your grade for the course will be based on

homework 50%,         in-class work 30%,         exam 20%

In special cases, I reserve the right to use different percentages, but in all cases your grade will be no lower than that using the above formula.
