Tips for new Unix mathlab users

To open a new account:

At the login window choose ``options'', then ``command-line login''. You will get a login prompt, that looks like this:

At this prompt, type ``new''. Then enter the requested information. It should only take a few minutes to create your new account.

This will not work if you are not registered for this course, or if you already have a mathlab account from a previous semester. If you think you already have an account, try to remember your password and login. If you cannot remember, send email to help@math.sunysb.edu. A warning: this is a very busy time of year for the helpdesk, it may take some time for them to send you a new password.

Usage guidelines:

• ABSOLUTELY no food or drink is allowed in the lab--including water bottles! You may take a break outside the lab for a drink anytime you need. If you violate this rule, you may be asked by a fellow student or lab monitor to remove the food or drink. If you refuse, campus security may be called.

• LOG OUT when you are finished, to protect your files!

• For after-hours access to the lab, you may obtain a proximity card from Santiago Simanca, room 5D-128 Math Tower. A 30 dollar deposit is required, BUT if you lose the card and tell us immediately, you will get 15 dollars back.
