INTRODUCTION TO ALGEBRAIC GEOMETRY

Academic Calendar.

MAT 536: We shall introduce the basic language of algebraic varieties, e.g. affine and quasi-projective varieties, maps, rational maps, products, Segre and Veronese maps, blowing-up, dimensions. As time permits, we shall cover topics such as the local theory, normalization, divisors, algebraic groups, forms, intersection indices (especially on surfaces).

TEXTBOOK(s): The main textbook is ``Basic Algebraic Geometry," by Shafarevic. We shall concentrate on Part I, i.e. on chapters I, II and then parts of chapters III and IV.

GRADE: Based on in-class participation, homework and presentations.
