Instructions for downloading Chebfun onto a SINC site
computer.
1. Go to the Chebfun homepage at www.chebfun.org
(the link is on the MAT 331 webgpage under Sept 28)
2. Click the 'Download V5.7.0' button.
3. Click 'Download v5.7.0.zip'
4. A Window will open. Select your MySBFiles folder.
Hit the 'Extract' button. Files should download
in a few seconds (about 7 Megabytes).
5. In MATLAB, type a version of the command
path('/home/campus.stonybrook.edu/cjbishop/MySBFiles/chebfun-master',path)
This tells MATLAB were to look for Chebfun.
Your command will have to use your ID instead
of mine.
The path command will have to be entered each
time that you start MATLAB, if you want to use
Chebfun during that session (you can enter it
anytime during the session), so you might want
to write a script called, say, 'set_chebfun_path'
that contains this command, for future use.
The following may also work (but I have
not tested it):
path('~/MySBFiles/chebfun-master',path)
6. Test that Chebfun is working by typing (in MATLAB)
f = chebfun('cos(20*x)');
plot(f), ylim([-1.2,1.2])
This should create a figure that looks like a cos wave.
Actually it is a degree 50 polynomial that is a very,
very good approximation.
7. The cos example is the first example in Chapter 1 of
the Chebfun Guide at
http://www.chebfun.org/docs/guide/
After class, you may wish to try out some of the other
examples in Chapter 1 (or even other chapters).
