Summer Math Scholarship

2026 - Enhanced Research Experience for Undergraduates

the Stony Brook Department of Mathematics,
and Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities (URECA)

The topic for 2026 will be Classical Methods of Mechanics.

This course satisfies the SBC SPK requirement; as such, students are required to give presentations. MAT401 and MAT402 may be repeated, since the topic changes every time.
All students wishing to receive departmental Honors in Mathematics must take MAT401 or MAT402 at least once (among other requirements). Students hoping to participate in the 2026 SummerMath REU must take MAT402 in Spring 2026.

Time: MW 3:30-4:50pm
Instructor: Prof Dror Varolin
Prerequisites: Multivariable calculus (MAT203 or MAT307 or AMS361), and basic partial or differential equations (MAT341 or equivalent).

For permission to enroll, please email janine.grega@stonybrook.edu. Assuming you have satisfied the prerequisites, you will then be given permission to enroll in MAT402 on Solar.
