Hi Tony,

Please see changes in red font (let me know if the font doesn't come through)...I had to change the exhibition dates for Alastair's proposal based on a conversation Friday with Flo and Megs.  The FAX exhibition would like to make the SCGP installation their closing event since it's traveled for the past two years throughout the US and Europe from its starting point in NYC.  Flo will work with us on the topic (patterns perhaps) for the spring so that the FAX curators can prepare a large ceremony and retrospective for us to host as well.

The revised schedule of 2012 -2013 exhibitions is:

October - Mathematics in Stone and Bronze
Nov/Dec - Controlled Evidence (Megs Schedel)
Jan/Feb - African Fractals and Afrofuturism (Stephanie Dinkins)
March/April - FAX (Flo Tarjan)
May/June - Alastair Noble Proposing
July/August - Flo Tarjan proposing
Sept on - Open pending search for Director/Curator of the Art Program
Note - Alice Major workshop proposal in discussion for Sept 2013 as well

In your letter to George do you want to mention Dan's suggestion of a sculpture series out to the Math/Physics garden as well and let him know that he can contact me for a walk through of possible spaces?

Attached is Stephanie's proposal for your records, let me know if you need anything else.  I hope to have the meeting minutes out to the group tomorrow.

Best,
Elyce

Dear David,
Thank you for bringing to our attention the possibility
of concerts by Zachary in the Simons Center. The
proposal was considered at the SCGP Arts Advisory Committee
meeting last week. The committee felt that free-standing
concerts independent of other arts activities did not fit
well with our current overall agenda. We will keep Zachary's
name in a file for curators to consult when they wish to
integrate a musical element in the programs they are
organizing. In that context it would be helpful for you or
Zachary to send us an up-to-date CV and CD of his performances.
Our search for an Arts Program director is not yet underway; in the meantime
please send material to the Center in care of Elyce Winters:
elyce.winters@scgp.stonybrook.edu.
Sincerely yours,
Tony

Dear Alastair,
The SCGP Arts Advisory Committee met last week and considered
your proposal to curate an exhibit here in the near future,
in the context of a possible candidacy for the Arts Program
Director position. Our current plan is to initiate a
search for a new Director early in  2013, with the
job to start in September. Meanwhile the Committee was
interested in considering a proposal from you for a show
to run May-June 2013. You know the Gallery, but we would
be happy to provide any additional information that might
be helpful. Could we expect a proposal, say, by December 1.
Please send it to the Center in care of Elyce Winters,
elyce.winters@scgp.stonybrook.edu, with a copy to me.
Best regards,
Tony

Dear Ann,
Fred Goldhaber brought to the Simons Center's attention the
possibility of our co-sponsoring, along with the Humanities
Institute, Alice Major's visit to Stony Brook in September
2013. The Arts Advisory Committee met last week to consider
this proposal. We felt that having the Center's name attached
to the project, thereby creating a visible link with an
entity literally and figuratively on the other side of Campus,
would be a very healthy development. More specifically,
we propose organizing an event here centered around Ms. Major,
say a "Poetry Science Workshop," for which we could pay her
an honorarium in the $500-750 range.
Please let us know if this idea fits with your plans for the
visit. Best to respond to the Center in care of Elyce Winters
(elyce.winters@scgp.stonybrook.edu) with a copy to me.
Best regards,
Tony
(Chair, SCGP Arts Advisory Committee)

Dear George,
Thanks for submitting your proposal which, as you know, was
considered at the SCGP Arts Advisory Committee meeting last
week. Those present then felt that, in the absence of both
our Arts-affiliated members, it would be inappropriate to
make any kind of decision. Meanwhile, however, we have to
keep in mind that our mandate does not include acquisition
of artwork for permanent display; we administer an activities
budget; acquisition funds are separately managed by Jim
Simons himself, with possibly some input from us. So as far
as the eventual object to be acquired, it might be a good idea
to submit a range of ideas: materials, sizes, locations. For
example, I think there is interest in a sculpture piece for
the North (enclosed) Garden. The Garden dimensions constrain
this particular item to about 2-3' diameter. Sincerely yours,
Tony
