MAT 512 Algebra for Teachers Spring 2008
Instructor: Prof. C. Denson Hill
This class meets Wednesdays from 6:50 to 9:40 PM in Physics P-118.
- TEXTBOOKS (2)
- Linear Algebra (3rd ed), by S. Lipschutz & M. Lipson, SCHAUM'S
OUTLINE SERIES (McGraw-Hill), ISBN 0-07-136200-2.
-
Contempory Abstract Algebra (6th ed), by J. Gallian, (Houghton Mifflin),
ISBN 0-618-51471-6.
- TOPICS TO BE COVERED:
Linear Algebra, the algebra of polynomials, algebraic
properties of the complex numbers, number fields, and
solutions of equations.
- FORMAT OF THE COURSE:
There will be one midterm exam (over linear algebra),
and the final exam (over the rest of the material).
Homework will be assigned each week, which is to be
handed in the following week, in order to be graded.
Students will be expected to go to the board, and show
whether or not they can perform certain basic algebraic
manipulations. They are also responsible for knowing a
few fundamental definitions, and of course, some basic
theorems.
- GRADING POLICY:
- Homework and class participation: 40%
- Midterm exam: 30%
- Final exam: 30%
-
The date of the midterm exam will be decided in class.
-
Also, exactly which sections of the two textbooks shall
be covered, will be decided in class. But, roughly, we
shall review most of the linear algebra book, and then
discuss that part of the book by Gallian which has to do
with polynomials, number fields, factorization, and roots
of polynomial equations.
- OFFICE HOURS (in Math 2-113):
- Monday 4:00 - 6:00 pm
- Friday 2:15 - 3:15 pm
- However, it probably is most efficient, if you have any
questions, to speak to me right after class on Wednesday.
