Fundamental Theorem of Algebra
There is a very short proof for the fundamental theorem of algebra using calculus. You can download the one-page paper from Paul Loya's website.
About the Midterm
I have typed up detailed answers to the midterm problems; you can find them here.
About Exam 1
Exam 1 is scheduled for Monday, January 30, in class. The questions will be similar to what appears on the New York State Regents Exam; click here for past examinations (both before and after Common Core). This page is useful for reviewing the Common Core standards.
Using LaTeX
To use LaTex on a Mac, I would suggest installing the free MacTeX distribution. It includes a text editor called “TeXShop” that lets you create PDF files from LaTeX documents with the click of a button. On a Windows computer, you can use proTeXt, and the included text editor “TeXstudio”. A really nice introduction to LaTeX, with an emphasis on typesetting mathematics, is Math Into LaTeX. For a more extended introduction, I would recommend A Short Introduction to LaTeX (which is rather long, despite the title).
Here are the lecture notes from January 25, when I gave an introduction to LaTeX. (Click here to download the LaTeX file.) Here is a simple template for those who would like to use LaTeX to do their course notes.
Here are the lecture notes from April 10, which contain a lot of drawings made with LaTeX. (Click here to download the LaTeX file.)
