Download Free Books by Knapp
From lower down on this page, anyone can download free PDF files
of certain editions of the seven most recent books by Anthony W.
Knapp. These books are at the first-year graduate level or
a little higher, depending on one's university. Five of
these books are "digital second editions" of books whose first
editions were published by Birkhäuser Boston between 2002 and
2007. A sixth, Stokes's Theorem and Whitney Manifolds, is
the "original digital edition" of a more recent book that was not
published previously in any form. A seventh is a preliminary
version of the book Introduction to Lie Groups, which is
to appear in the series of graduate texts of the American
Mathematical Society.
All seven books are available for download:
- Basic Algebra
(digital second edition)
- Basic Real Analysis,
with an appendix "Elementary Complex Analysis" (digital
second edition)
- Stokes's Theorem and Whitney
Manifolds (original digital edition)
- Advanced Algebra
(digital second edition)
- Advanced Real Analysis
(digital
second edition)
- Introduction to Lie Groups (preliminary version 5)
- Lie Groups Beyond an Introduction (digital second
edition).
The files of the books have been made available as a gift to the
mathematics community worldwide. The files are limited to
noncommercial use for purposes of education, scholarship, and
research. Pages of the files may be freely stored
electronically, freely accessed, freely copied, and freely
transmitted. A few specific conditions on electronic use are
imposed to maintain the noncommercial nature of the files and ensure
the integrity of the individual pages, including that no one is ever
charged a fee for acquiring or looking at the files and that the
files are not translated into any other computer format (e.g.,
EPUB). The specific conditions are spelled out on a page of
the front matter of each book, usually on the fourth page of the
front matter of the PDF file of each book. Please adhere to these conditions.
Clickable PDF files available below
Julien Tinnes pointed out to the author how one could add a
clickable table of contents as a sidebar to any PDF book, and he
kindly wrote a program to carry out most of the steps for preparing
such a modified file for some of the above seven books. The
resulting files are offered below for most of the books with
directions saying "Download clickable
version of front cover and inside together as PDF." Using this
feature is within the scope of the terms and conditions referenced
above.
Unfortunately the exact way in which the clickable versions work
depends on what PDF reader one uses, and terminology varies as
well. People who use Apple's program Preview or Adobe's
program Adobe Reader will see that when one brings up a clickable
file of each book the first time, the file appears initially on the
screen in a window that has a sidebar on the left. The chapter
titles appear in the sidebar as separate entries with an arrow at
the left of each. If the arrow points to the chapter title,
then clicking on the arrow will expand the listing to include
section titles for that chapter. Clicking on any chapter title
or section title will take one to the first page of that chapter or
section.
In Preview one can switch between the Table of Contents in the
sidebar and Thumbnails of all pages in the sidebar by using the View
menu. In Adobe Reader one can carry out this switch in the
View > Navigation Panel menu by toggling between Bookmarks and
Pages. In Adobe Reader the same effect can be achieved also by
means of icons in the far left column of the sidebar.
Many people view PDF files with a browser rather than Preview or
Adobe Reader. Some popular browsers that are free of charge
are Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge, and Apple
Safari. All of these but Safari behave on first appearance in
the same way that Preview and Adobe Reader behave. Safari
seems to require two extra steps to make use of the clickable table
of contents. A user points to a PDF file in Safari, then saves
the file somewhere, and finally views the saved file in Preview.
Download Appropriate Edition of Each Book
For each book the front cover and the inside are
available together as a single PDF file. Both a standard
version and a clickable version are
available. In all cases the inside pages are black and white
only. The printed area of the inside pages is 28 picas wide
and 43 picas high. It is centered left to right, so that if
two printed pages on pages of size 8.5 inches by 11 inches are held
up back to back, then their printed areas will coincide. The
size of the front cover is 6 inches by 9.5 inches and the placement
of the cover in the PDF files is consistent with the printing on the
inside pages. Thumbnails of the front covers appear below.
