Stony Brook University, home to many highly ranked graduate research programs, is located 60 miles from New York City on Long Island's scenic North Shore. Our 1,100-acre campus is home to 24,000 undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students and more than 13,500 faculty and staff, including those employed at Stony Brook University Medical Center, Suffolk County's only academic medical center and tertiary care provider. The University is a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities and co-manager of nearby Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), a multidisciplinary research laboratory supporting world class scientific programs utilizing state-of-the-art facilities such as the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, the National Synchrotron Light Source, and the Center for Functional Nanomaterials, and the NewYorkBlue IBM BG/L+P supercomputer, owned by Stony Brook and managed by BNL. Stony Brook is a partner in managing the Laboratory for the Department of Energy, and is the largest institutional scientific user of BNL facilities. As such, many opportunities exist for collaborative research, and in some cases, joint appointments can be arranged. Stony Brook University is host to the Simons Center for Geometry and Physics, and shares in many of the Center's activities; permanent members of the Center are tenured members of the Physics or Mathematics Departments at Stony Brook and their respective units: the Yang Institute for Theoretical Physics and the (Milnor) Institute for Mathematical Sciences.

  • Lecturer, Director of the Math Learning Center
  • Stony Brook University’s Department of Mathematics expects to have a lecturer position, director of the Math Learning Center (MLC), available with a start date of September 2013.

    Required: PhD in mathematics, five years of teaching mathematics at the college level, one year of experience administering a math help center/supervising TAs, knowledge of contents of undergraduate math courses at Stony Brook University, familiarity with the interconnection of undergraduate math courses at Stony Brook University, experience in coordinating undergraduate math courses (large, more than 500 students) and smaller courses, experience in Web Assign and similar platforms, and proficiency in web design.

    Responsibilities of the director of the MLC are: administration of the MLC in particular, scheduling and supervising tutors and faculty working in the MLC; maintaining MLC website; ordering necessary equipment; participating in developing syllabi and choosing textbooks for college algebra, pre-calculus and calculus classes taught by the Department; supervising the TAs teaching college algebra classes; teaching and coordinating pre-calculus/calculus math courses; and teaching graduate- level math courses for teachers.
