Positive scalar curvature and surgery
I'll talk about a basic tool in the study of Riemannian metrics of positive scalar curvature. The first version of this idea is a down-to-earth construction due to Gromov-Lawson which shows that any manifold which results from a codimension >2 surgery on a manifold with a positive scalar curvature metric also admits a positive scalar curvature metric. I'll also talk about a more general version of this tool due to Chernysh and Walsh and sketch one or two non-obvious applications of these ideas.
